It’s been 13 years since the last Friday the 13th movie was released, and you know what? As much as I love the original early Friday the 13th films, this is a horror franchise I don’t miss. I’d be fine if I never saw another new Friday the 13th movie made again. If I have a hankering to watch a crazed killer brutally murdering people, I can always revisit those early classics. There’s really nothing new that Hollywood would do with the franchise. They keep making these films, and it’s always more of the same.
It looks like we might be getting more of the same next year. Over the past few years the creator of Friday the 13th, Sean Cunningham, and Victor Miller, the original movie’s writer, have been fighting over the rights to the franchise and who gets control of what.
Back in 2018 a judge ruled Victor Miller owns the rights to the original Friday the 13th screenplay in the United States. Cunningham has failed to overturn the ruling. However, Cunningham owns the character of adult Jason Voorhees, introduced in later sequels. The other major elements of the franchise will have to be split between the two parties for any future projects. The whole thing seems like a mess.
There might be something happening soon, though, with the franchise as Sean Cunningham recently updated his bio over on Cameo to indicate that the franchise is coming back to life soon. It says:
“Sean S. Cunningham directed and produced the seminal horror film Friday the 13th, creating the iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The movie has spawned 12 installments with a 13th scheduled for next year.”
If this is the case, Cunningham and Miller seem to have worked out a deal. Or, Cunningham is developing a Friday project of his own. There are no details to share other than that!
Obviously, I have no interest in seeing any new films in the horror franchise, but what about you? Do you want to see any new Friday the 13th films?
