A new trailer has been released for the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, starring Naomi Ackie (The End of the F***ing World) in the lead role. The biographical drama about the life and times of the iconic singer also includes Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown and Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis. Clarke Peters will be playing John Houston, Whitney’s father, and Tamara Tunie will be portraying Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother.
Kasi Lemmons (Harriet) is directing the pic from a script by Bohemian Rhapsody screenwriter Anthony McCarten.
Sony describes I Wanna Dance With Somebody as a “no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice.” The film recounts the story of a New Jersey choir girl who became one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time. Houston’s career took off immediately following the release of her self-titled debut album in 1985, and went on to sing the mega-hits “Greatest Love of All,” “Saving All My Love For You,” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “Run To You,” “How Will I Know,” “One Moment In Time,” “I’m Every Woman,” and the Dolly Parton cover, “I Will Always Love You,” made popular in her film, The Bodyguard, in which she starred opposite Kevin Costner.
She unfortunately went on to struggle with drug addiction, and died in 2012 at age 48. She was a beautiful singer and an amazing talent, and I’m excited to hear her music again in this film. It looks like Naomi Ackie really captures her personality and star quality.
Sony has scheduled I Wanna Dance With Somebody to be released in theaters on December 21st. Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think.
