During the Pixar portion of the Disney/Pixar presentation at D23 Expo today, we were able to get our first look at their upcoming movie Elemental, and we also have some new story details to share! We’ve got a photo, some concept art, and a poster.

We have seen very little of this film before today so I was pretty stoked to finally see what director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream had in store for us. I can honestly say I wasn’t disappointed.

We were first given a little background into the world we will be entering into. The story takes place in a city where the elements of Earth- air, fire and water all live. However, due to what each element is made of, they normally don’t interact with each other.

This story centers on two elements who find a friendship in spite of their differences. Ember is a tough and fiery young woman, and Wade is a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy.

Actors Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion) and Leah Lewis (Half of It) were introduced as the main characters Wade (water) and Ember (fire), respectively. They explained that the movie dives into how two people who are as different as possible can be friends.

When introducing the audience to the film, Sohn gave us insight into where this idea came from:

The idea [for Elemental] started with my parents. As immigrants to the U.S. from Korea in the ’70s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to create a life here in New York and just like them, many people have left their people and families to a new land, with hopes and dreams, all mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and neighborhoods.

Ream also added that the story is “about anyone who’s ever made a sacrifice or taken a risk, set it in the hustle and bustle of the city, but with a twist.”

We were treated to the trailer, and that is what sold me on the movie. The trailer was not released online because the animation is still unfinished. But, the feeling behind the film was perfectly conveyed.

It appears to be a beautiful representation of the struggles that come with trying to bring together cultures that have a history of avoiding each other. Check out some of the images that have been dropped from the panel and let us know what you think.

Elemental will be released on June 16th, 2023.
