A little over a year ago Paramount Pictures officially announced that Star Trek 4 was in development with Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directing. When the project was first announced, producer J.J. Abrams said, “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast.”
Since then Shakman left the project to helm Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie. The film was supposed to hit theaters on December 22nd, 2023, but the new Star Trek movie has been removed from the release schedule. It looks like Abrams and the studio just couldn’t get their crap together. It’s a shame, and now fans are left wondering, once again, what the future holds for the Star Trek film franchise.
In the meantime, there are great and exciting things happening with the Star Trek shows like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds!
Star Trek 4 was supposed to see the return of Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. But, apparently, the studio wasn’t even able to get them all to sign onto the movie.
So, here we are, and it seems like the studio has a long road ahead of them to get a Star Trek movie off the ground. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next Star Trek film we see would be connected to one of the many TV shows like Strange New Worlds. Either that, or it will be another reboot. I’m just not sure if they will be able to lock down Abrams’ cast again.
What do you think?
