Everyone knew that Superman was going to show up in Black Adam before the film was released. Once that news got out, it spread like wildfire. But, there was another great cameo in the film that I didn’t know what coming!
If you haven’t seen the film yet, there are SPOILERS ahead!
In the film, Black Adam finds himself facing off with the Justice Society of America, a team that consists of Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).
Atom Smasher, a.k.a. Al Rothstein, is very much a rookie in this story. He’s so much of a rookie that the suit he’s wearing is a hand-me-down from Al Pratt, the original superhero Atom, and Rothstein’s uncle. He was a founding member of the JSA in the comics. Well, Al Pratt actually makes an appearance in the film and he’s played by none other than Henry Winkler!
It’s a brief cameo, but it was one of the more enjoyable moments in the film. When talking about how that comes came together, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia told /Film:
"We wanted to have a little moment where we acknowledged that relative of Atom Smasher that was an original part of the JSA, and has history with Noah. So we wanted to get someone that would get the fans excited, who was charming and fun, and Henry [Winkler] came in and just crushed it. We only had him for a little bit, but he went, he recorded that stuff, it plays so well with Noah, Noah is so engaging, and you just love watching him on screen. We were so happy with the way that scene turned out, and it was just enough to give a nice bit of history and also add the stakes for Smasher."
This was a fun little moment as Atom Smasher really wants to live up to his family legacy and make them proud with this first mission that he’s on. Garcia went on to discuss Atom Smasher's motivation and what this cameo scene meant for the character:
"[Atom Smasher] really wants to make sure he makes his uncle proud, he makes his family proud, and he is also aware that there's some darkness in his family history — that while his uncle was a hero, there's another relative of the family that was a villain. And we wanted just the slightest elements of that to show in terms of Atom Smasher really wanting to find a path and do what's [right] while also trying to plant seeds at how intrigued he is by Black Adam and how Black Adam functions in that universe."
The producer also said that some seeds were planted in this film for a future “very interesting pairing” of Atom Smasher and Black Adam. If you saw the film, you know what he’s talking about. That team-up would certainly make for an interesting and fun dynamic.
