Last week the first teaser trailer was shared for Mindy Kaling’s upcoming HBO Max animated series Velma. This is an adult animated series based on the beloved kid’s cartoon Scooby-Doo, and it seemed to me like they are trying to emulate what Harley Quinn is doing with their animated series.

According to showrunner Charlie Grandy, he would actually like to see Velma crossover with Harley Quinn at some point similar to how Scooby-Doo would cross over with other shows and celebrities. During a recent interview with CB he went on to say:

"If this is a success or does take off, there will absolutely be talks about doing something. Again, that honors the original show, and we want to honor the original Scooby as much as we can. So that's baked into the DNA of the original. So we'll look for ways to do our take on that."

It’s not hard to imagine those two shows crossing over with each other as the story and tone are very similar. The series tells the origin story of Velma Dinkley, “the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

The series is bringing together a great cast, which includes Mindy Kaling as Velma, Glenn Howerton as Fred, Sam Richardson as Norville (“Shaggy”), and Constance Wu as Daphne. The rest of the voice cast includes Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Velma is scheduled to debut on HBO Max sometime in 2023.
