Top Gun: Maverick is filled with all kinds of cool callbacks to the original 1986 movie, but there’s one that a lot of fans probably missed. It’s an audio Easter Egg and I’ve watched the film a number of times and never noticed it until a fan pointed it out on Twitter.

The film’s editor even admitted that this is the only person that was able to find this and point it out to the rest of the world. The film’s star Tom Cruise and frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie were even impressed by the fan!

Here’s the Easter Egg that was pointed out by the fan: “My favorite party trick is showing people that they sampled the volleyball scene audio in Top Gun 1986 for the beach football scene in Top Gun Maverick.”

The film’s editor, Eddie Hamilton, saw the tweet and replied: “Emma I am stoked you noticed this. Very deliberate little nod to the original iconic beach volleyball scene. Bravo. Well played. No one else has spotted this as far as I’m aware. Enjoy your time in the smug zone."

After that, Christopher McQuarrie sent out a Tweet saying how impressed he and Tom Cruise were by the find: "Tom and I were most impressed when Eddie showed us this over breakfast this morning. Keep on smugging, Emma."

I thought that was a fun little Easter egg and it’s really cool that the creative team responded to it the way they did! There’s no doubt that Emma is enjoying all the attention!
