Brandon Cronenberg's new horror movie Infinity Pool was extremely twisted and completely messed up. It was a hard film for me to watch, and you can read my review of it here if you want. The movie has gotten mixed reviews at Sundance with people calling it "perverse” and “violent”, but the movie is going to find its audience, and I have no doubt it will gain a cult following.
The version of the movie that was screened at Sundance was an NC-17 version of the movie, but that is not the version that is going to be getting a theatrical release. There is a toned-down R-rated cut of the film that will be presented to general audiences.
Cronenberg explained why they had to tone it down for the theatrical release telling Collider: "NC-17 was an attempt to rebrand the X rating, but they didn't do it successfully, and it came with all this stigma. You can't actually market a film if it's an NC-17 rating.”
He went on to say: "So specifically in the US, that means that you can't really have a theatrical release of any size. But, I knew that going into it, and it's not a problem everywhere and usually there's a plan to release the full film."
When talking about the R-rated version, he assures that it "isn't hugely different" and those who prefer their genre movies on the more extreme side need "not worry about the versioning." He added: "I think film is, on some level, a very pragmatic art form. There's a lot that you have to deal with. There's a whole industry, and so you just do everything you can creatively to satisfy yourself, but then you understand that they're just aspects of the industry that you have to deal with and that kind of comes with the terrain."
So, while you won’t initially get to see the NC-17 version of the film, at some point you will have that opportunity as “there’s a plan to release the full film.”
The movie stars Mia Goth (Pearl) and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman), and this is the synopsis:
While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: Either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.
NEON and Topic Studios will release the movie in theaters on January 27, 2023.
