Scream franchise creator Kevin Williamson has seen Scream VI, and in a recent interview with SYFY Wire he shares his thoughts on the film, how much he loves it, and says it’s a “fresh reinvention” of the franchise.
What makes this next chapter in the Scream franchise unique is the fact that the story is not set in Woodsboro. This film takes the Ghostface horror to New York City, which is sure to be very interesting to see.
Scream VI “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” That fresh chapter turns into another nightmare as another Ghostface killer is on the loose and hunting them down. When talking about the movie, Williamson said:
“It doesn’t feel like ‘Part 6,’ it feels like you’re watching this big, huge, fresh reinvention. I love, love, love, love it. I’ve watched the movie with a big smile on my face. I think it’s everything and more. And going to New York was awesome. The movie feels new, it feels fresh, it feels like a new movie.”
He went on to hype it up, saying:
“It’s really good. It’s great. There’s no way around it. I’m very happy with how it turned out … I really do have all that enthusiasm for it. I’m really excited.”
That’s cool to hear! If the creator is that stoked about it, then maybe the hardcore longtime fans of the franchise, like myself, will actually like what the movie delivers. I liked the last one, but this one is definitely going to be a different beast than any of the film that has come before.
Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not), are both back directing the movie.
The cast includes Melissa Barrera as Sam, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, Mason Gooding as Chad, Samara Weaving, Liana Liberato, Hayden Panettiere as Kirby, and Dermot Mulroney. Courteney Cox also previously confirmed her involvement. Some newcomers include actor Dermot Mulroney and Mission: Impossible star Henry Czerny, plus Jack Champion (Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water), Liana Liberato (Light as a Feather), Devyn Nekoda (Sneakerella), and Josh Segarra (Arrow's Adrian Chase).
When previously talking about the violence factor of the film, Barrera recently said, “With the last Scream, they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been, up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay. But with this one, they were like, ‘We’re going all out.’ It’s potentially a hundred times gorier.” So we’ve got that going for it!
Scream VI will be bringing Ghostface back to theaters in March 10, 2023.
