Every time I go to Sundance, the films that I look forward to watching most are horror movies. I just love that genre, and there’s always a mixed bag of them at the film festival. Nothing really struck me through the first half of the festival, and then I saw the movie Talk To Me, and it completely blew me away!
While the movie delivered some serious chills, I walked out of the theater with a huge smile on my face! This movie deals with the occult, and I’ve had my own ideas about films that deal with playing around with witchcraft and the occult. I feel like a lot of the movies that have been made in the past miss the mark, especially when they involve teenagers. But, this one nails it! Talk To Me plays with some great freakin’ ideas and executed them perfectly.
Talk To Me is an awesomely terrifying supernatural horror thriller and one of my favorite movies from the fest so far! It delivered some crazy nightmarish thrills, but most importantly the story was great, it was well written, and the characters were well-rounded and developed properly.
The movie centers on a group of teens that have some fun and find a rush in conjuring spiritt and being possessed by them. Yeah, sounds like fun. “Conjuring spirits has become the latest local party craze, and looking for a distraction on the anniversary of her mother’s death, teenage Mia (Sophie Wilde) is determined to get a piece of the otherworldly action. When her group of friends gathers for another unruly séance with the mysterious embalmed hand that promises a direct line to the spirits, they’re unprepared for the consequences of bending the rules through prolonged contact. As the boundary between worlds collapses and disturbing supernatural visions increasingly haunt Mia, she rushes to undo the horrific damage before it’s irreversible.”
I loved how the filmmakers handle all of the horror elements in the movie. It was legitimately scary stuff and everything served the purpose of the story. The scares weren’t just thrown in for the sake of it, they helped move the story forward in gut-wrenching and interesting ways. There were also some great makeup effects created for the movie for the ghosts that these teens encounter over the course of the film, along with other brutal things that happen.
The movie comes from filmmaking duo (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou from the @RackaRacka YouTube channel, and the description says they “suspend us in the foreboding and nightmarish realm making the most of their twisted propensity for the surreal and grotesque. Effortlessly blending the creepiness of a ghost tale with the modern sensibilities of a horror-thriller for the Insta-generation, Talk to Me exposes an uncanny reality where the dead roam eerily close to the living.”
Talk To Me is an amazing fun and truly scary horror film that is easily marketable. This is a must-see horror movie and it’s one that deserves a big theatrical release! I could see this being a very successful horror movie if marketed right and it could even be the start of a new horror film franchise! This is a movie you won’t want to miss!
