Dark Horse Books has a new graphic novel coming out that sounds like off the wall fun, The Rock Gods of Jackson, Tennessee. Written by Rafer Roberts with art by Mike Norton, colorist Allen Passalaqua, and letterer Crank!, the new story features a high school band of misfits who have to learn to play together to achieve their dreams of fame, freedom, and popularity.
Set in 1989, juvenile delinquent Marty Ward never wanted to join the Rock Gods, a band made up of nerds Jonny, Lenny, and Doug. But when the highschoolers land the gig of a lifetime, opening for local rock legend Tommi Tungstun, Marty changes his tune. The only thing standing in their way are their parents, teachers, a school full of jerks and bullies, bad bosses, sanctimonious preachers, corrupt politicians, each other, and a rampaging horde of mutated monsters tearing through Jackson and eating everything in their path. Easy peasy.
“This is the comic I was born to write,” says Roberts. “ROCK GODS is incredibly weird, and a little scary, but it’s also oddly tender and caring.” This story combines action, adventure, horror, and humor and sounds like a wildly fun story to read. It also definitely sounds like a comic that could use an awesome soundtrack to go with it, so while this obviously won’t release with an official one make sure you get a good 80s rock playlist to listen to while reading. You can pick up your copy of The Rock Gods of Jackson, Tennessee in bookstores on June 6, 2023 and in comic shops on June 7, 2023.
