The series Cobra Kai has been a phenomenon of a hit ever since it meekly debuted on YouTube. The Karate Kid spinoff hit hard, with most fans agreeing it was a better series than anyone had bargained for, and was so shockingly great compared to the spinoffs and sequel series in other franchises that we had been given previously. The Sony-produced show has held strong for five seasons and is about to wrap up its story with a sixth and final season at Netflix. The show’s creators have always talked about the fact that the series could lead into any number of spinoffs, but we haven’t heard any finality about that yet.
Now President of Sony Pictures Television Studios Katherine Pope has sat down with Deadline to talk about the future of the series, and she teased:
They have some ideas in terms of expanding Cobra Kai and coming at the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yes, the movie is a good example too. It’s all of these. I think we’ve all learned these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially for the fans, and feel like big, big worlds that exist on lots of different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane.
Audiences are so savvy now and accepting multiple levels of the IP so the Cobra Kai universe lives on, that’s for sure.
The Karate Kid movie she’s referring to was announced last year, and its plot is still completely under wraps. We don’t know how or if it’s connected to the Cobra Kai universe, but it feels like it would be silly not to. There’s such a fanbase for that show, it would be cool to see it transferred to the big screen. But whatever they do, I trust the creators, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to do right by the fans. They made this series as a love letter, and as huge fans themselves, so they will only move forward doing justice to this franchise, and I am excited to see what they come up with.
Cobra Kai Season 6 hits Netflix soon. Watch the announcement below:
