Another big casting announcement has been made for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel as Denzel Washington has joined the cast! Washington and Scott previously worked together on the 2007 crime drama American Gangster.

Washington joins the previously cast Paul Mescal as Lucius and Barry Keoghan as Emperor Geta. There’s no information on who Washington will play in the movie.

Deadline explains how the casting of Washington came about. Once Mescal was locked for the project the producers “pushed hard for a star for the other major role in the film and took a shot with Washington.”

They just weren’t sure if he’d actually join the movie, but after they presented the pitch to him and he had his meeting with Scott, sources close to the project said he “was excited about the bad-ass role” and he jumped on board!

It’ll be interesting to find out who Washington is going to play in the movie.
