It looks like we’re going to be getting another Monk story in the form of a movie! Tony Shalhoub recently confirmed that a Monk movie is in the works at Peacock and he will be back as former SFPD detective turned obsessive-compulsive consultant Adrian Monk. He also said that “everybody” is back for the project!
Shalhoub shared the exciting news while a guest on Dr. Loubna Hassanieh's Unheard Stories: Stories That Inspire, saying:
"We're going to do — I'm not sure if I'm doing a spoiler alert here — but we're doing a Monk 90-minute movie for streaming. And we're going to start shooting that in May. It's Monk post-COVID, so he's in trouble [laughs]. We're bringing everybody back, all of the characters, and doing a 90-minute streaming [movie] for Peacock."
Some of the other characters in the series include his original assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), Lt. Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), and his second assistant Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) and her daughter Julie (Emmy Clarke).
The Monk series came to an end after running eight seasons in 2009, so after 15 we are going to get another chapter of the Monk saga and I can’t wait!
Back in 2020, Shalhoub briefly revived his character for a "Monk in Quarantine" segment on Peacock's At-Home Variety Show. After that, the actor did say there was a "good chance" he would reprise his role in a Monk TV movie, and now it’s happening! So, that's great!
There’s no information on what the story will entail, but there was an attempt to make a movie back in 2012 and one idea would have seen Monk get married and go to France, “only to have his new wife try to kill him." After that idea was scrapped "for creative reasons", a second script was written titled "Mr. Monk for Mayor," and it would have saw Monk's step-daughter, Molly “become an investigative reporter like her mother and wants to expose a scandal at City Hall. But the only way to get that information is to get inside the mayor's office — hence Monk's decision to run for mayor."
That movie never got made because its $6 million budget was too high. Regardless, we are getting a Monk movie now, and I’m sure it’ll turn out to be fun! Are you happy to learn that we’re getting a Monk movie?!
