The Ring and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is developing a new movie with Sam Rockwell in talks to join, the script and story of which come from Love & Monsters writer Matthew Robinson. This is a very interesting team of talent to see come together for a project.
I’ve enjoyed the work of all of these individuals, and this would actually be Verbinski's first directorial feature since 2016's A Cure For Wellness. Verbinski is a solid filmmaker and it’s interesting that he hasn’t made a movie since 2016! But, he has been developing projects.
At one point he was attached to director Channing Tatum’s Gambit, but dropped out of the project in 2019 because “the script we never got to a place where everybody was in agreement.” He then jumped on board to direct an animated movie for Netflix titled Cattywumpus, which ended up being dropped by the streaming service. But, maybe it’s not dead.
According to Discussing Film, this next film project with Rockwell might be Cattywumpus, which tells the story of cats in outer space, or it will be a completely different animated project that the filmmaker has been developing.
Gore Verbinski previously said in 2021: “I’m working on two screenplays … they’re both animated movies. They’re not Westerns. One is a musical. These are so many years out. They take so long that I just … I mean, it’s way too early to talk about them.”
So it could be one of those. There are obviously no details to share, but Love & Monsters was an especially fun movie, so whatever the story ends up being, I’m sure it will have a solid and entertaining script that will take audiences on a wild adventure.
