Director James Gunn’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is fun and goofy Marvel entertainment. It captured the spirit of the holidays and delivered a feel-good funny story for the fans to enjoy. There were a few things that were revealed during the Marvel Special Presentation, and I thought I’d share seven of them that stuck out to me. So let’s get on with it!

In the film, Star-Lord is feeling super down in the dumps over his situation with Gamora. So Drax and Mantis head to Earth to bring Peter Quill back the perfect present to cheer him up! Something that he’ll never forget, which is Kevin Bacon.

Peter Quill Learns Mantis is His Sister

Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, is pretty down in the dumps when we catch up with him in this new Marvel special. The whole story revolves around cheering him up for the holidays, so Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) embark on a journey to kidnap Kevin Bacon and bringg him to Star-Lord as a gift.

As you might imagine, Peter Quill is more annoyed than happy about this. But, there was one gift that he received that he was incredibly happy about. In the story, Mantis reveals to Peter that she is his sister and that her dad was also Ego. This is not how things are in the comics, but it works for the MCU!

This reveal fills in a big gap in her back story and explains why she ended up as Ego’s servant. It turns out that she was one of the few that Ego felt was special enough to keep around.

It will be interesting to see how this new story element will factor into the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Groot Has Grown Into a Young Adult

It was fun to see a different older version of Groot in this story. He’s looking pretty jacked, and it seems like he’s in his young adult years. That last time we saw him, he was a moody teenager!

Groot’s looking good and healthy and I’m not excited to see how his story plays out in Guardians 3. One thing that I really hope to see is Groot end up in his giant form at some point!

The Guardians Team Have Taken Over Knowhere

We were first introduced to Knowhere in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It is the giant decapitated head of a celestial That was turned into an intergalactic hub. It was the home of The Collector and his collection of stuff.

The Guardians have now taken over Knowhere, and they are building a livable community there. It was also revealed that The Collector is still alive and was not killed by Thanos. We also learn that The Guardians acquired Knowhere from The Collector.

We don’t know where exactly the Guardians got the money to buy Knowhere, but maybe helping save the universe has its financial benefits. It’s safe to say that we will see its evolution in Guardians Vol. 3.

GoBots Now Exist in the MCU

This was a huge fun surprise, but apparently, the GoBots exist in the MCU and Drax hates them! It turns out that Drax holds a grudge against the GoBots because they killed his cousin.

GoBots are now a major plot point in Drax’s background, and I love it! This is such an unexpected twist! Drax has a run-in with a cosplayer who’s dressed up as a GoBot in Hollywood.

What’s crazy is Marvel has never owned the rights to GoBots! Transformers, yes, but GoBots, no. This may have just been a throwaway gag to pay a nostalgic tribute to the GoBots, but now I just want to see a Drax adventure where he fights GoBots!

Peter Quill Still Hasn't Found Gamora

Peter Quill still has a hole in his heart from losing Gamora, and you can tell he’s really struggling not having her around. He lost her once when she died, and then he lost her again when a past version of herself showed up but had no connection with Peter, so she went her own way.

Peter wants to find her and attempt to win her heart back, but he still hasn’t found her. This is going to be one of the main plot points in Guardians 3 as it will close out the story. The question is, will Peter and Gamora end up together?

I think that’s going to be a long shot. I don’t think they will. This is just a very different version of Gamora.

We Learn Where Peter Quill Got His Blasters

At the end of the special during an animated sequence, we learn that Peter got his blasters as a Christmas gift from Yondu.

Earlier in the series, Peter gives Yondu a little knickknack as a gift, but we are made to believe that Yondu is a hard-hearted jerk as he yells at Peter and storms off after he’s given the gift. But his heart is softened at the end, and he gifts Peter the blasters.

The Guardians Have a New Ship

The Guardians of the Galaxy have a new ship! So far, in the course of their adventures, the team has traveled in ships named the Milano and the Benatar. Those ships served them well, but they’ve got a new toy!

The new ship is called the Bowie, which is named after the late David Bowie. The ship was originally introduced in the comics and the Bowle estate gave the approval to use the name.

Gunn was actually Hoping to get David Bowie to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but he passed away prior to shooting.

Are there any other things in the Marvel Special Presentation that stuck out to you that you want to share?
