Producer J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures have been having a super rough time trying to get a fourth Star Trek movie off the ground. They’ve been picking away at it for years, and it came close to happening a couple of times, but then nothing ever came of it.

Back in 2022, Star Trek director and producer Abrams shared: “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before.”

Matt Shakman (WandaVision) was set to direct the film, but he ended up dropping out to develop Marvel’s Fantastic Four. Star Trek 4 was then removed from Paramount’s release schedule. So, the film didn’t make it into production by the end of 2022.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Chris Pine opened up about his career and the type of roles that he takes on. He also talked about Star Trek 4 and said that he still hasn’t heard anything about the project. He shared that “In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything.” Pine says that the way all of this works is “frustrating,” but that’s just how things go with these big franchises.

Esquire then followed up with Abrams on the film and he offered an update. He said that he still hasn’t found a new director for the movie, but added that “it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.”

Well, it’s good to hear that they have a story that they are excited about telling. It would be really nice to see a compelling Star Trek movie again. I’m sure one day another Star Trek movie will be released, but who knows when that will happen? While we wait, there’s plenty of great Star Trek content to be found on Paramount+!

As for what Pine thinks about the franchise, he said, “I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise.”
